If there is one thing we have learned over 20 years of building swimming pools, it is that the more we communicate with our customers, the happier everyone is. Notice I said everyone, because if our customer is happy, then we are happy.

I hear this question more as the summer gets closer and people want to get in their new fiberglass pool quickly. Although we do have people call on May 1, wanting to be in their pools by Memorial day, most people understand the time to get started is in January, and even better in November.

When ABLE Pools and Spas begins a fiberglass pool project, everything you need to use your new pool, is included in the price. As we often caution new pool buyers, the most important question to ask is, "what's not included?" But there are so many other options you can add to your pool - some expensive and others less so. Which optional item will give the most value, or provide more use of your pool, or just make for more fun and play on those warm, and not so warm, summer days?

One thing about building Pools in Wilmington, we have enough sunny weather that a pool heater can often give you better use of your pool. There are a few questions that should be considered first though, before you decide to have a heater installed.

This is a very dangerous time of the year for most pool buyers. The reason is very simple - the questions no longer are about the quality of the pool, or the abilities of the builder. Now the most asked question is, "when can you start?"

Willie Nelson, one of the greatest songwriters of the era, and a personal favorite, wrote a great song in the 60's - "Funny How Time Slips Away". There was a time when the fiberglass pool was considered "experimental", and "second best" - a big bathtub. Most times we couldn't give them away - now we can't build them fast enough. A lot of time has slipped away, and there has never been a better time to invest in a fiberglass pool. What happened?

I believe that in many ways, the development and growth of the Internet is the greatest invention of the 20th Century. I know, I know, things like the telephone, aviation, television and even the personal computer are powerful and life changing advancements, but the Internet has combined the thinking power of the World into one huge powerful tool that you can access in your study at 3:00 in the morning - and many of us do. It lets you communicate in real time with people all around the world, seek information from the greatest minds of our time, and research far more deeply than the Encyclopediae ever could - and the prices!! Everything is cheaper on the Internet!! But as always, when discussing pricing, the cheapest is not always the least expensive.

When I decided to establish and write this blog on our website, my intention was to provide as much information as I could to prospective pool buyers. The hope was, and is, that as buyers become more informed and understand the questions to ask, and the potential benefits and pitfalls of this purchase, they would begin to have confidence in our company and we would have an opportunity to earn their business. Along the way, we would slowly help folks increase their knowledge of Fiberglass pools, things to watch for and reasonable expectations for a successful completion of their project.

One of the things I mention in my Free Book, is that one of the downsides of fiberglass pools is the size limitation. Because of the way fiberglass pools are transported, the maximum width of a fiberglass pool will be about seventeen feet. Even then, the pool usually has to be on a special tilted trailer to reduce the total width being transported.
I remember how chaotic our first pool was, until we realized we (the adults) were in charge. It was after we established some guidelines for our new pool, that we began to really enjoy being poolside, and how much more we enjoyed having our friends and neighbors visit with us as well. The key to excellent pool enjoyment - POOL RULES.

Fiberglass pools are a lot like cameras - OK follow me here. I own a very good camera and I want you to know the camera is the cheapest thing about the whole setup. Once you get the camera, there are lenses, and filters, and lights, and special batteries, and tripods, and monopods, and pretty soon your camera is lost among a closet full of other things.
When people get their new pool, in about a month they will be added to every single pool supply store and pool gadget store in the nation. These companies scour the public permit applications for names and addresses, and then start to remind you about the wonderful things you can buy for your pool. A lot of the things offered are useful but a lot of them are just ways to lighten your wallet, or weigh down your credit card.
So, in this Blog, I am going to present to you, in no particular order, five really cool optional items for your new figerglass pool. You don't need any of these things to enjoy your pool, like I didn't need a fisheye lens for my camera, but it's very cool.... and I have one. So here we go - hang on to your wallet!

One of the joys of fiberglass pools, is the very limited number of things that can go wrong.
Unlike concrete pools, where a crack can mean the ruination of the whole project, or vinyl liner pools where liner damage and bottom damage can get very costly very quickly, fiberglass pools are pretty much indestructible. In fact, one of the great attractions of fiberglass pools, is the relative lack of maintenance. The incredible strength of fiberglass, and the smoothness of the surfaces mean your new fiberglass pool will be there year after year, providing you with backyard enjoyment just like it was new.
After 400 and more fiberglass pools built over the years, we have become very good at installing fiberglass pools. Everyone knows how much I love building fiberglass pools, so in the interest of fairness I decided to discuss some potential issues with fiberglass pools. This has been difficult to write, because, well let's face it, there are really not many things that cause problems in fiberglass pools. Some problems do remain, however, and here is a list, and the best way to prevent or resolve these issues - and now as I think of this, perhaps we shouldn't think of these things as problems, but just nuisances that cut back on our poolside chillin' time - a little - maybe.....

When I am discussing a new fiberglass pool with a prospective homeowner, I always like to get one thing out of the way immediately - the price. Our prices are printed on a laminated sheet of paper, they haven't changed in years and they are there for anyone to see. It is almost impossible to speak with someone about how a circulation system is going to work, when all they are thinking about is, "How much will a new fiberglass pool cost"? Price is not everything, but it is certainly important and let's get the information out front for everyone to see.
